Box office mojo avengers infinity war8/27/2023 Starring Jack O’Connell and Laura Dern, this one premiered at Telluride last year to tepid reviews and opened similarly to a mere $78,822 from 109 locations. Right behind that is Trial by Fire, a biographical drama about a man who faced execution for a crime he may not have committed. This is already one of the critical darlings of the year and the sequel will star Robert Pattinson, because that dude apparently never stops working. In indie release news, The Souvenir, a new A24 release courtesy of director Joanna Hogg and starring Honour Swinton Byrne (guess who her parents are), took in a strong $85,851 from four theatres. It made around $8m, which is a little below Box Office Mojo’s prediction, but it did way better than YA adaptation The Sun is Also a Star, which debuted at number eight with a disappointing $2.6m weekend. New at number four is A Dog’s Journey, because apparently we’re just going to keep churning these movies out. With $29.4m, it falls to number two on the list but stays ahead of Detective Pikachu, which took in $24.8m in its second week. It’s now the second largest domestic release of all time, although I’m not sure it’ll be able to take on the $936m made by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Speaking of Endgame, after four weeks, the film has soared past $770m domestically. May we forever be blessed with films where Keanu Reeves, drenched in bisexual lighting, kills millions of people while esteemed character actors watch on. For a hard-R action film in the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame, that’s impressive as all hell. John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum made more in its opening weekend domestically than the first film did during its entire run, and takes the top spot at the box office this weekend with $57m. But therein lies the power of our ageless darling Keanu Reeves. I’m not sure anyone could have predicted how much people would get into this franchise or how big the opening weekend would be for the third in the series. When John Wick, a small budget action thriller starring Keanu Reeves, premiered in 2014, it grossed $43m domestically and received encouraging reviews.
